Friday March 8th, 2024 NHL Betting Breakdown
Today was the NHL trade deadline and there were huge trades made! The following article will touch on today’s big moves as well as additional futures and tonight’s betting breakdown!

Arizona Coyotes @ Detroit Red Wings
9:08pm EST
I am surprised this line is as low as it is for Detroit. Detroit has lost five of the last six against Arizona but the Coyotes have moved Jason Zucker to the Nashville Predators and Matt Dumba to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Detroit surprisingly sat still with the team they have today and it may not hurt them in terms of what they would have had to give up, but it will not help them to get anywhere this season. The Wings are an established mid-tied wildcard-esque team who shouldn’t win a playoff round especially if they run into Florida, Carolina, or the New York Rangers. The New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils as the two legitimate threats to both the Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning for the wild card spots.
Detroit comes into tonight’s matchup on a three game losing streak, but those three losses are against two ace teams in the Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers, and one of the hotter teams right now in the New York Islanders who have won five straight. The Wings had won six in a row before this losing streak and a matchup against Arizona is exactly what they need. Detroit should control tonight’s pace and Connor Ingram in net should boost Detroit’s offensive output. When Detroit wins over Arizona, they win in fashion putting up four or more goals. If you’re looking for some value in odds, you can splash the Wings team total of 4.5 +220. I see this game going heavily in Detroit’s favor in a 5-2 type final.Â
Minnesota Wild @ Colorado Avalanche
9:08pm EST
Colorado was the most active team at the trade deadline most notably acquiring Casey Mittelstadt, Sean Walker, and Yakov Trenin. I don’t believe these moves make Colorado any more dangerous than they’ve been, but the acquisitions should give them a little better depth on their chart. The Avs come in as a -225 favorite with a team total of 3.5 priced at -145. Colorado has scored four or more goals just once in their last six matchups with the Wild but this offense has been on fire. Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon continue to dominate for the Avs and I expect a situation for the Avs to have three goals by the third period. I believe we will be looking at an empty net situation at worst for Colorado tonight so I do want to have exposure to their team total. The Central Division is stacked right now with Dallas, Winnipeg, and Colorado all fighting for that top seed. Matchups with a Minnesota team who are seven points out of a wild card spot are games the Avs need to win. I am going to play it cautiously with only two units. Minnesota is a nightly hit or miss team. I don’t expect this game to be a blowout and do expect a tight game.
Dallas Stars @ Anaheim Ducks
10:08pm EST
Dallas’ big splash for the deadline was acquiring Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames and he should be a great fit on this defense. The Ducks on the other hand moved Ilya Lyubushkin and Adam Henrique out. Like Colorado, Dallas is fighting for the top spot in the Central Division and a matchup against the Ducks is a must win for them. Poor John Gibson continues to rot in Anaheim and is a much better goaltender than his performance on the Ducks suggest. Dallas has won nine of the last ten against the Ducks and tat should continue tonight. The money line is too high at -300 to consider playing, and if we’re going to play the spread of -1.5 or -2.5, I would rather play the team total as well. I will be dividing the units up between the -1.5 spread and the 3.5 team total. Dallas cannot get caught here but they shouldn’t. We should be able to tell early what type of production Dallas will produce tonight so we will be able to adjust live if needed.
Winnipeg Jets @ Seattle Kraken
10:08pm EST
The Jets have three games in hand on both the Dallas Stars and Avalanche ad are +120 to win the division outright and we are going to play that. We will not, however, be playing the Jets tonight. The Jets made a huge move in adding Tyler Toffoli from the New Jersey Devils, but i do not see him playing tonight. If Toffoli does play, I don’t like that Winnipeg is on the road coming off a recent loss to Seattle and Laurent Brossoit expected to start. Seattle is the one team I believe can bump Vegas out of that final wild card spot and a win tonight against Winnipeg will pull them within four points. The Kraken have won two of the last three matchups against the Jets after losing the first four overall. Jordan Eberle was locked up for another two years today removing any speculation that he would be traded. Seattle is going with the roster they have for the rest of the year and have a lot of ground to make up after their abysmal 2-7 start to the season and the eight game losing streak they went on at the end of November into December. Seattle turned it around winning nine in a row, but then faltered by losing eight of their next ten. Finding consistency has been tough for this team and asking them to win back to back games against the Jets will be tough. I am going to splash their team total with Brossoit in net, but other than that this game is a sit back and screen for me.
