Saturday 10/21 Breakdown

Detroit vs Ottawa

Expect Detroit to have a bad game coming off their big win over the Penguins. Ottawa has looked great to start the year with their only loss coming to my Cup favorite Carolina Hurricanes. I locked in the over 6 at -165 because I anticipate the line jumping to -190. The Wings should come out and look sloppy defensively giving the Ottawa offense the edge. Korpisalo should be in net tomorrow night but the game should still see some goals.

Ducks vs Coyotes

I don’t plan on making a play on this game. There’s no real consistency in the way these two teams play each other and the Coyotes are a team I don’t like betting against. The over opened up at 6.5 and is juiced, making 5.5 -185.

Toronto vs Tampa Bay

This is a rematch of the last two post-season’s opening rounds. With Vasilevskiy out, and the Leafs coming off back-to-back one-goal losses, I expect an offensive outpouring tomorrow night. Expect Matthews to get back on the score sheet and to lead the Leafs back to the win column.

6.5 -155 is too high for me to play both sides of this so I am going to be looking at either props for the Leafs, or their team total of 3.5 at -120.

Washington vs Montreal

Montreal will continue to be bad, but Washington will be as well. Washington still has the star power that Montreal doesn’t so I expect a big get-right game from this Washington group. Alex Ovechkin has been held without a shot in his previous two games so I expect a big rebound from him here against a lowly Montreal team. The lines are down on Washington right now so we’re able to get the ML cheap as well as their team total at 3. Depending on who is in net for Washington will determine how I play the game. If Keumper is in net we will lean into the Capitals ML. If Charlie Lindgren starts, I will be leaning into the game over at 5.5. Keumper should be able to keep Montreal at bay, but if Lindgren starts I give Montreal’s offense a bit of a bump. Jake Allen is in net for Montreal tomorrow which should play into the Capitals’ favor after giving up five goals in his first start against the Leafs.

Vegas vs Chicago

Connor Bedard does not make the Blackhawks good all of a sudden, so expect Chicago to be bad all year. Playing at home against the defending champs who are already 5-0 does not help. I’m a little curious why the line is only -225 here as I’d expect it to be -250 or more. Playing the Vegas 3.5 team total isn’t a bad play, I’m just going to be laying off it myself. You need to decide if you’re going to keep betting Vegas based on the streak they’re on, or fade it and wait for a loss before jumping back on.

Philadelphia vs Dallas

Philly is coming off a big win against Edmonton in a game I was weary to take Edmonton on. Since we only had them in our round-robin, I am going to use this game against Dallas to pounce against them. Dallas is 2-0-1 with their loss being against the 5-0 Cup defending Knights team. Dallas plays well against Philly and Carter Hart should get a night off tomorrow. He’s expected to start but I lean to see Sam Ersson get the nod. Either way, I would grab the Stars 3.5 team total now cause the line won’t get better. Dallas is also a parlay piece as they should win convincingly.

Blue Jackets vs Minnesota

We are going to be in a much better position playing the Wild this year doing it sparingly and in the right spots. This is the right spot. Columbus will be playing in a back-to-back so lines are not posted yet. We will revisit this one tomorrow.

Penguins vs Blues

The Penguins have won 7 of the last 9 against the Blues and are coming off a really bad loss to the Red Wings. Evgeni Malkin is a God damn liability in overtime and when the game is on the line and his lack of effort with the net empty sealed the game for the Wings. Pittsburgh should be able to rebound against a bad St. Louis team tonight. I expect this to be an open-ice game with both teams getting some. I see this as a 5-2 / 6-2 type win for the Penguins so playing both the game over and the Penguins team total are where I will be.

Carolina vs Colorado

I will be laying off Carolina here. I would lean towards Colorado being at home to win. Carolina is on a long West Coast road trip to start the season and should go home happy if they can come out of it with a 3-3 record with Sebastian Aho being out for two of the games. Colorado comes in as the underdog making playing them more of an edge on the line. Using Colorado as a +1.5 parlay piece is on the table too.

Rangers vs Seattle

Going back to the Rangers here and fading Seattle. Seattle finally got their first win with Adin Hill in net against the Hurricanes. We still got the win with the Hurricanes team total so I plan on continuing that trend tonight with the Rangers. The Rangers are coming off a bad loss to the Preds and Laviolette is not going to let that loss go over well in the locker room. With the Rangers being on the road the lines are lower giving us the ability to get the team total at three.

Winnipeg vs Edmonton

I’d like to use this game for Edmonton against Winnipeg the same way we did against Nashville. The Oilers do not play the Jets well over recent years but this year has been a struggle for Winnipeg out the gate. I expect McDavid to take control of the game and the Oilers to use their speed to take control of the game. Their team total and money line are both in play here and a potential ladder game for them.
