Boston vs. Ottawa:

  • I don’t see Boston slowing down tonight and don’t see why they’re only -122.
  • The books are looking at this as a Boston team being on back to back games against a division rival. Even if Boston were to lose tonight it’s a line you need to play. If it was -150 or higher I would have thought it was a trap, but I feel this is just bad pricing.
  • Ottawa has not looked good in their first two games of the season and could start 0-3.
  • Even on back to back nights, while Boston doesn’t have an elite goaltender, they have two very good solid starters. I’m not concerned with who is in net for them tonight.

Flyers vs Lightning:

  • The Flyers being 2-0 is probably the only reason why this line isn’t -400 or more tonight.
  • These are the games the Lightning need to win if they want to make the playoffs this year and Philly will provide a decent test for them. Philly coming in 2-0 under Tortorella should give them a vote of confidence tonight but I do believe the Lightning handle them.
  • I don’t think the -300 ML is worth risking in any play tonight, so I would rather attack the team total. The team total at 3.5 is -150 and my logic is, if the Lightning can’t cover the team total, then playing the ML is not a game I want to sweat as a parlay leg being limited to 3 goals or less against a Flyers team that has an opportunity to rebuild an identity this year.
  • Tampa has won 9 of the last 10 and scored 4 or more goals in 8 of them.

San Jose vs Islanders:

  • While the Isles are only 1-1, the loss was to a good Florida team that the Isles could split in a 7 game series.
  • The concern with the Isles is that they have only 3 goals from their forwards in two games and 5 from their D-men against the Ducks.
  • I’m going to lay the -190 on them tonight as this should be a game they win and the Sharks remain winless. I will play it cautiously though because if anyone is going to give San Jose their first win, it would be the Islanders.

Vancouver vs Columbus:

  • These two are struggling and it’s going to cause some fireworks tonight.
  • The Canucks held a players only meeting after last night’s loss in which they blew another two goal lead.
  • Spencer Martin should get the start tonight with Demko starting last night and giving up six goals.
  • Columbus is home and should be fresh tonight having been off since Saturday.
  • I expect both teams’ offenses to tee off tonight so I will be playing the over at 5.5.

Buffalo vs Edmonton:

  • Stuart Skinner gets the start tonight after coming in in relief against the Flames Saturday night.
  • Eric Comrie gets the start for Buffalo so both teams will have backups in tonight.
  • Buffalo has shown a lot of fight in the first two games so I do expect them to be able to get to Skinner tonight.
  • I don’t love playing 7 but considering it would push a 6.5 win you can play it. I will be making sure I get 6.5 tonight but won’t be scaling in. Edmonton should be able to pull this out possibly in a 5-3 win.

Vegas vs Calgary:

  • This will be the game of the night tonight from a hockey standpoint. From a betting side, I would bet the Flames because I think they’re the better team long term but don’t feel it’s a necessary play.
  • Vegas has looked good in their first 3 games and both teams are a combined 5-0 to start.
  • My concern for the Flames is that Vegas will be deeper up front so if Huberdeau can be held in check the Flames will struggle. Calgary is better on the blue line and in net especially with Logan Thompson starting for Vegas.
  • I’m not willing to play the over either because this game will have a playoff atmosphere to it even though we’re early in the season. Calgary is rebuilding their identity and Vegas is on a mission to prove missing the playoffs last year was a mistake. I personally want no skin in this one and will save it for Nashville.

Los Angeles vs Nashville:

  • Get right night for Nashville.
  • I mentioned that their two losses to Dallas should be an after effect of playing in Prague and not an effect of who they are as a team.
  • With LA coming in on a b2b from Detroit, Nashville should be able to pick up where they left off against the Sharks.
  • This is a game where I would be willing to go all in on my side plays, parlaying them with someone like the Islanders, playing them straight, and playing the team total of 3.
  • Nashville wins 4-1 / 4-2 / 5-2
