The Philadelphia Flyers are in a complete rebuild. The Flyers hired Keith Jones to be President of Hockey Operations during the offseason and Danny Briere as the new general manager. John Tortorella returns for his second year of coaching to one of the worst teams in the NHL. Unfortunately, the roster will get much worse as the year goes on. The Flyers were 4th worst in scoring per game last year and total goals and will now play without Kevin Hayes, Ivan Provorov, and James van Riemsdyk. Carter Hart is a restricted free agent this offseason, as well as Morgan Frost (who the Flyers will look to resign), and the Flyers are open to moving top player Travis Konecny and could move Sean Couturier. The bad season will not be Tortorella’s fault, so look for Briere to keep Tortorella around to build a good foundation in the locker room for the young guys. The Flyers are not expected to win and are a potential lottery pick team this year.Â
Carter Hart is someone I hate targetting. I enjoy watching this kid; he shows signs of being an incredible goaltender when on his game. Hart was projected to be the Flyers franchise goalie, but he has struggled to be that reliable elite-level goaltender in this league. He’s great enough to get paid but not great enough to get paid by the Flyers in this rebuild. Unless the Flyers make an incredible push this season to be a borderline playoff team, the Flyers will move on from him. Hart lacks long-term confidence. He has repeatedly shown that he can play at an elite level for multiple games at a time, but he hasn’t done it long-term. Granted, he has not had much support in front of him, but you can immediately see what kind of game Hart will have. Resigning Hart at this point of the rebuild would be a waste of money, a waste of Hart’s career, and a waste of a massive haul of assets the Flyers could get for him. If Hart goes to a contender and gets support in front of him from a good defense, he could mature into a championship-winning goalie.Â
The 2023-24 season will be very bleak for the Flyers. They will be one of the worst teams in the league, along with the highest underdog odds, making it difficult to bet against them. Team totals will be at 3.5 against the Flyers, with Cart covering that at a very high percentage. We will target Philly when we can afford it. The Philadelphia Flyers franchise has been in disarray these past three years, and the future is not bright anytime soon.Â
